White vinegar and White wine vinegar, are they the same thing?

March 27, 2010

Is white vinegar and white wine vingar the same thing and if not can you use White Wine vinegar in place of white vinegar?
this is for a recipe, it calls for white vinegar but i only have white wine vinegar
its for a meatball sauce recipe, I would think it would improve the flavor, wouldnt it?

I wouldn’t think they are the same. I would not use the white wine vinegar for any of the cleaning type uses.

But, as you added, it probably would enhance the flavor of the meatballs.=]

The Process of Making White Wine

March 16, 2010

In order to make a good white wine you must be more careful during the entier process.
The most common and simplest method of making White Wine is to use green grapes. The fermentation of the must of white grapes will produce your wine.

There is another method that is not typically used and is not recommended for beginners. Using Red Grapes you must strip the must of all skin, seed, and stems before fermentation. Any traces will lead to discoloration.

Harvesting the Grape Timing is very important when picking the grape. It will have an effect on the type of grape you plant and the type of wine you wish to create. The time of day the grapes are picked will also be very important as it will affect its sugars and acids. They must be carefully so to limit bruising, and are usually placed in a cleaner to remove all foreign debris.

Juicing: during the juicing process all the grapes are striped of skin, stem, and seeds. The juice from this process is called free run must. The remaining grapes must be pressed quickly as air is a menace to the process. The longer the must has contact with air the more it will get discolored.
Letting the must sit for 6-12 hours will allow for the impurities of the grape to separate from the must. A procedure called raking removes these impurities, and gets the must ready for clarification.

Clarification this is the last step prior to fermentation, and is to remove any solid matter from the must. Allowing the must to sit for 24 hours will normally do the trick. It is usually done in colder temperatures. Once this is completed the juice is ready for Fermentation.

Fermentation during fermentation it is ideal to store the juice in a stainless steel vat. This will help turn the grapes natural sugars into alcohol. You then have a choice to use the natural yeast found in the grape or to use a cultural yeast. During the fermentation you must keep careful control of the temperature as any slight variations can affect the taste. To cold the fermentation will all but stop, to warm and the fermentation will speed up to quickly. The ideal temperature is said to be between 60F and 68F. This will enable you to keep all the natural aroma of the grapes. The process of fermentation should take 3-4 weeks.

Post Fermentation the process is almost done. In post fermentation the juice is cooled almost to freezing. This process is called cold stabilizing. A wine maker will do this in order to remove the tartaric crystals (wine diamonds) that can form during fermentation. The crystals themselves are harmless and removing them can actually hurt the flavor. This process is done only for the look, and so that the consumer will not be put off by seeing crystals inside there bottles.

Can I use White wine vinegar as a substitute of regular white wine?

March 13, 2010

Because I need to make a 5-course meal, and i need White Wine for my risotto but im underaged.

No, do not use vinegar instead of wine. Somebody else mentioned that you can buy cooking wine. That’s true, but it is heavily salted so that it is no longer good for drinking. I refuse to use alcohol that is specifically for cooking, quality is never good.

I suggest asking an adult to get the ingredients you need. I’m 36 now, but once upon a time my parents were happy to help me get beer and wine for cooking.

What’s the difference between vinegar and white wine vinegar?

March 11, 2010

I have a whole bottle of white wine vinegar but no regular vinegar. Instead of going out to buy vinegar for the apple pie I’m making, I thought I’d just use the white wine vinegar. Is that ok?

White wine vinegar is delicious – it’s made with White Wine and has a hint of flavor of what the wine tasted like before it became vinegar. White vinegar is colourless and tastes somewhat bland compared to wine vinegar. The wine vinegar will impart a slight sweetness to the recipe where the white vinegar will not. I wholeheartedly recommend wine vinegar in many recipes and actually prefer it to white vinegar for baking. It’s great in various salads too. Purchase a white wine vinegar that is a deep golden colour. I find their flavors to be more appealing and taste less diluted.
