As every lover of white wine will know, there are a number of different types of this delicious tipple available to buy from local wine merchants, stores and even online. All of the different Types of White Wine have remarkably different tastes, meaning that everyone has a firm favorite that they love to drink above all others. What are currently the three most popular types of White Wine though, and what can be said about them?
Chardonnay
Chardonnay was the most popular wine throughout the 1990s and its popularity still hasn’t waned as we enter into the second decade of the new millennium. With the ability to be made into either a sparkling or a still wine, it has massive appeal to wine lovers throughout the world. Although it originated in the Burgundy region of France – a region better known for its red wine – it is an incredibly versatile grape and can therefore be grown in many different locations throughout the globe, regardless of climatic conditions.
When it comes to good food pairings for this wine, it is generally drunk with either chicken or fish, as the flavors complement each other perfectly. Generally Chardonnay has a velvety texture and often exhibits a taste of citrus, such as lemon or grapefruit. It really is a bottle for all occasions!
Sauvignon Blanc
Sauvignon Blanc is one of the most versatile wines in the world and therefore is perfect to drink either with many different types of food or simply by itself after a long day at the office. Like many other white wines, Sauvignon Blanc originated in France and some of the best is still produced in the Bordeaux region of the country. Great Sauvignon Blanc bottles have also recently started to be produced in New Zealand, although the Australian offerings have so far been disappointingly flat and not hugely fruity on the whole.
Sauvignon Blanc is most definitely best when served with seafood, salads or poultry, although as previously stated it is incredibly versatile and as such can lend itself to nearly every meal. The wine tends to be very fruity and often exhibits strong hints of apple, pears or gooseberries, although it can even have tropical flavors such as mango and melon. The best Sauvignon Blanc is usually grown in colder areas and exhibits a slightly smoky flavor.
Pinot Grigio
Pinot Grigio has cemented its place among the world’s most popular wines in recent years and can now be found being supped in bars throughout the world. Originally produced in the Venezia area of Italy, it is now made in France, Germany, Austria, the USA and even as far away as Australia. In essence, this is a wine that is now grown in every corner of the earth! It has a number of different names throughout the world though – such as Malvoisie in the Loire Valley and Grauer Burgunder in Germany – so it might not always be obvious that you are in fact drinking Pinot Grigio!
Pinot Grigio is extremely versatile and as such it can be paired with virtually any food. It has a crisp taste and dryness in every sip and it also usually has a number of aromatic and fruity flavors. Pinot Grigio also ages extremely well, meaning that a bottle that is left for a couple of years will produce a stunning taste.
