What’s the difference between vinegar and white wine vinegar?
March 11, 2010
I have a whole bottle of white wine vinegar but no regular vinegar. Instead of going out to buy vinegar for the apple pie I’m making, I thought I’d just use the white wine vinegar. Is that ok?
White wine vinegar is delicious – it’s made with White Wine and has a hint of flavor of what the wine tasted like before it became vinegar. White vinegar is colourless and tastes somewhat bland compared to wine vinegar. The wine vinegar will impart a slight sweetness to the recipe where the white vinegar will not. I wholeheartedly recommend wine vinegar in many recipes and actually prefer it to white vinegar for baking. It’s great in various salads too. Purchase a white wine vinegar that is a deep golden colour. I find their flavors to be more appealing and taste less diluted.

Got something to say?
It should be fine. The taste of the two vinegars is a little different, but either should work with apples.

White vinegar has very little flavoring, just a vinegary flavor, and doesn’t add much and can actual run foods… for apple pie, i would ONLY use apple cider vinegar, use white and you will be sorry.
as my favorite chef Alton Brown says, the only good thing to use white for is cleaning your windows

White wine vinegar is a little less acidic, but it should be fine for apple pie. There will be no taste difference.
